As of late, grave concerns have been expressed about the security - or lack thereof - at South Africa’s border posts. Increasingly, this has shown to pose a major security threat to South Africa, given the staggeringly high crime rate the country is failing to curb.
Aside from high incidents of crime, partially perpetrated by undocumented illegal immigrants, who fail to secure employment in South Africa, lax border security poses a major threat with regards to the infiltration of often porous borders by international terrorist organisations. This report explores the continuing threat posed by these vast, unguarded borders in South and Southern Africa and discusses their vulnerability to exploitation by international terrorist organisations and the overall threat posed by the phenomenon of ungoverned spaces on the African continent. While the research paper focuses on border insecurity and the potential terror threat with specific reference to South Africa, the wider regional consequences are discussed. |
